Teeth Whitening
Whitening is a fantastic procedure that can benefit anyone with natural teeth and a healthy mouth. There are various methods by which this can be achieved, but at Swakeleys we believe that the ‘slowly-does-it’ approach carried out by a qualified dental practitioner is by far the most responsible and safest route to a whiter, brighter smile.
  
Why should a dentist whiten my teeth?
These days there is plenty of choice when it comes to whitening. You can even have a procedure carried about at some hairdressers! For sure you will pay less, but you really will get what you pay for. It is vital that your teeth and gums are healthy before any procedure of this nature is carried out as off-the-shelf/amateur options can lead to gum erosion, damage and loss of tooth enamel and structure, and extreme pain sensitivity. The only person you should really trust to give this assessment and any subsequent treatment is your dentist. In fact, the General Dental Council states that:
“…it is illegal for non-dental professionals to be offering tooth whitening treatment, and that only dentists, and dental hygienists and dental therapists on the prescription of a dentist, can carry out the procedure”.
How do we do it?
As already mentioned, we believe in the slow approach, using a mild bleaching gel. Initially the dentist will take an impression of your teeth and gums. This is used to create a ‘tray’ that fits your mouth perfectly. At the second appointment you will be shown how to load the tray with gel and place it on your teeth. The tray is worn for a few hours a day (or overnight) over the course of 1 to 4 weeks. We can also provide further supplies of gel so that you may ‘top-up’ every 12 to 18 months.
